HE. IS. RISEN!
What a great day, another year of remembrance of what Christ did 2000 years ago. It still boggles the mind; sovereignty of God who knew it advance that by giving man free will, He was giving opportunity to His own rejection. Yet, God understood then, what man understands through maturity. Relationships are a choice. Thus, in understanding the evil that exists in the world and in the hearts of man, how can one acknowledge our broken condition yet deny that we need a Savior? For as the lyrics go... "If it's up to anyone of us, we'll never get out of here." We like to think it depends on us. We like to believe we can do it on our own. Weakness is for other people. Yet our own strength will fail us. The only way for renew is, in fact, to call upon the name of the Lord. For even though soldier standing at the foot of the cross acknowledged the truth... a nearly instant revelation immediately following the last breath of Christ. Indeed, this was the Son of God. In that moment, he knew his sin. He knew he needed a Messiah. And yet, Peter had not preached the solution. Repentance. For there is One Savior. One Truth. One Way. One confession. On this Easter 2017, aka #effectiveSunday, may many more experience the revelation of the Roman soldier. Pray today would be a revelation day for the saving of many souls; for indeed we do need a Messiah. May today be a celebration in Heaven and Earth, of our Risen Lord and what He accomplished for all humanity through His death and Resurrection. May we made anew and alive in Him, as we confess with your mouths and believe in our hearts, that Jesus Christ is Lord. Pray today would be a declaration heard around the world; that this season would not be another holiday turned for the commercial benefit of economy but the confessional transformation for eternity. We need a Messiah. And one was given to us. Through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Who takes away the sins of the World. For the glory of God. - PNC

![]() It's the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. As you've traveled the roads and heard the radio, today is all about egg hunting. Like the kids need more candy. Does anybody still have leftovers from their Halloween stash? 10,000 eggs at our church's event today!! Obviously, we all know it's not about searching for eggs, but today is an incredible opportunity to converse with those still searching for Christ... whether they know it's Christ that they need or they have a sense that a spiritual component is missing from giving life meaning purpose. We are all on a journey, in understanding the brokenness of the human condition in light of Jesus Christ. Some of us with burdens we can not fathom carrying through this life. But when one understands the burden Christ carried... For the past few days, I've been listening Joe Satriani's latest album, Unstoppable Momentum. If you aren't familiar with the brilliance of Joe's mad guitar skills, you are yourself a few moments on YouTube. The second to last song on the album, is titled The Weight Of The World. As I had my stereo cranked up yesterday, I couldn't help but wonder in amazement. We carry physical loads with our bodies. We carry heavy loads with trucks and trailers. The weight of the world is astounding, before everything that man creates and builds. Life and all of it's stuff gets heavy. The physical, the emotional, the spiritual. God holds the world in His hands. And Christ carried the sins of the world to the Cross. Is there a more appropriate weekend, to engage community and share the truth and power of the Gospel, that whatever burden and weight we carry, whether within our ability to manage or under a load meant for our destruction and detriment, we can bring it all to the cross of Christ, in exchange for the life made available to us through his death and resurrection. So, pray, this #communitySaturday, that among all the fanfare, laughter and joy that will be experienced by kids and adults alike, may it pail in comparison to the revelation of the truth of Christ's life and the purpose for His time on this earth. May the great exchange occur; our sin for His saving grace. Pray the burdens of many would be cast at His feet; that through Christ many would rise again as He did. May today be a day of transformation, as the opportunity is presented for the community to come and hear eternal truth, through the whimsical fun that is a search for eggs. For the searching of Christ is greater The reward ever-lasting. For He came that we might have life abundant Through the carrying of the sinful, weight of the world. What a wondrous gift He gave and made available to us To those that would believe and call on His name. - PNC ![]() There are so many potential directions to take, when #missionsFriday coincides with Good Friday. Which come to think of it, is always going to be the case, I suppose. So a number of thoughts were in prayerful consideration today, until in between playing a couple of amazing albums, I caught the majority of a sermon on the death and resurrection of Christ. The details of his trial and what followed is just... almost to much to hear. Especially if you have a weak stomach! 39 blows to the body, with a leather whip covered in pieces of metal and sharp rocks. It's not surprising Christ needed help carrying His cross. What is amazing, was that He had the strength to carry it at all. The beating and torture with the whip was so severe, most people didn't even survive that! Less work for the soldiers, as it voided the need for a crucifixion. By the time one was on the cross, breathing was near impossible. If you weren't near death almost immediately, then you were an exception. And yet, to speed up the process, they pierce His side. How Christ and the thieves were able to exchange words, is amazing. Add to that, Christ finds the strength to speak; more like yell, the committing of His spirit unto God. Then the aftermath; never seen before nor since, when a person has died. Three hours of darkness. An earthquake. Surely, all creation mourned and grieved the loss of the Son of God. Yet, God recognizing the plan is complete, splits the temple veil. The pastor describes that chaotic scene. As people come for Passover preparations, the temple is in disarray. The Holy of Holies is accessible to the public; for the first time ever! And as part of the preparation was the acknowledgement that there was only one king, in God. Yet, during the trial, the religious leaders brought political pressure by saying there was only one king in Caesar. They accused Christ of blasphemy for stating His identity, while they were at fault for declaring competing kingships. What a mess! In his sermon, the pastor stated something incredibly profound. In the exchange between Pilate and Christ, Pilot thought he was total control, yet had none. Christ appeared to have no control of the situation, yet had it all under His control. Clearly... society needed a Messiah then. All the more, we need a Messiah today. I said this many, many posts ago... perhaps on a prior Good Friday. The automaker Porsche, may lay claim to the slogan "there is no substitute", but when it comes to eternity, there is indeed, one and only one substitute. The reason 3,000 were added to the church on the day of Pentecost was largely in part to the realization and understanding once Christ was dead, that indeed He was everything He said He was. The guilt of what they had done was real and fresh in their minds. They were ready to know and to hear, what, if anything could be done to redeem themselves. Thus, when Peter laid out the simplicity of the Gospel; hearts were ready to receive. Even if it seemed all too easy, if it's what was needed, they were ready to hear it and act upon it. The goodness of this Friday is only because of the benefit of hindsight. For those who lived this day and played a part in it, even if they did nothing; this was a horrendous day to be alive. But a God-ordained, amazingly-sovereign day to die. For the redemption of the world and the saving of many souls. On this #misssionsFriday, thanks for taking the time to read this extended post. Once again, I believe through the power of the Holy Spirit, it almost wrote itself and believe what's here is what God desired to be stated. So pray, this would be a day of revelation and understanding, for those who took a part in the uprising against Christ... they represent the world we live in today. A culture wanting nothing to do with Christ. May eyes be opened to the truth and purpose of Christ and the cross. Pray this would be a day that many would say as the soldier did; truly He is the Son of God. May this Easter weekend, be a time of spiritual awaking and resurrection, for the saving of many souls, both in local churches and global missions. For all the events and activities, may opportunities abound for the conversation to take place... that each of our sins tortured Christ; but Christ would rather take our place than watch us die in our sins. That He took our beating; Then carried our sin. Yet found the strength to speak life While on the verge of death. All for the love of God. Literally. Eternally. Friday is Good; for in one death; all may live. Abundant and Eternal. - PNC ![]() For the past few Thursday, we've been targeting the topic of strategy, from a variety of perspectives. I'm truly not trying to be repetitive, but I felt in my spirit to continue in this realm of thinking, once again for #deaconThursday. There's many reasons for what we experience on any given day, but in the end, are we in the place we are because of someone else or because of our self? We make choices and decisions within the parameters, boundaries and instructions that have been placed upon us by another. In that context, there is a balance to how we proceed. Then life happens. Followed by moments of stupidity. Advanced by the ensuing frustration of said stupidity, whether it be our own or that of someone around us. And as we've discussed before, arrangements are made and remade. Strategies are implemented and changed. Sometimes it's worth the time and effort to scratch, scrap and start-over. Other times, it's best to assess and improvise. Time is of the essence. Help may not exist. Finances, rarely, may not be part of the problem or solution. It's your fault. It's not your fault. Maybe it was an accident. Everybody knows. Nobody knows. Only you know. Whatever, it is... whatever is going on, First Lady Abigail Bartlet, of political drama series, The West Wing sums it up for us in the three simple words: "Game on, boyfriend." So much may stand in the way, but one's commitment to see it through, by and with the grace and help of God is all you truly need. All that's left is to simply do what needs to be done. Thanks, once again, for joining me in prayer, this #deaconThursday. Pray for strength, for whatever struggles and frustrations may be occupying their recent and current days. May there be a grace about their lives and hope to their resolve; to remain committed to "making it work" through a positive, can-do attitude. Pray God grant them wisdom in the decisions and directions they should take, especially when initial strategies aren't working, when resources and help are scarce and finances, when they are a part of the picture are discouraging. May there be a fresh unity of spirit among church personnel and admins, that they work together, better... to an even greater degree and depth of experience than perhaps they ever have before. That God would accomplish the miraculous Regardless of who and what may stand in the way. May God direct the steps of man, Though he makes plans in his heart. To bring Him glory, As we fulfill His calling for our lives. - PNC ![]() I have no idea what was so special about yesterday, but through the 400-something miles, there were plenty of State Troopers along the highways and by-ways. Part-trained eye, part life experience; it's just a part of my time on the road... perhaps more-so than most drivers. Towards the final miles of my day, I was talking with my friend, also in the home-stretch of his day. In discussing police presence on the roads, he shared his own experience. One of the former patrol cars had just passed him. Of course, when someone is flying up on you, you don't know that it's a former unit, rather than an active one... until they pass you. Then he interrupts the conversation with an "ut-oh"... the real deal pulls alongside, then decides to brake and duck in behind him Naturally, we've all thought it. "I haven't done anything! What gives?" Moments later, the trooper exits. Realized he wasn't going to make it jumping ahead of traffic, so he played it safe and raised my friends' blood pressure. A few minutes later, I'm a mile from my exit. And out of nowhere.... sure enough, trooper in the fast lane, flying up. I back off, just to be on the safe side... he passes me, then gets in front of me. I watch him take the very exit I need. "Well, that was fun. Just keep going bro!" How often we "forget", Satan was an insider. Cast down from Heaven, he has an understanding of spiritual matters. He was once part of the truth, enjoying the presence of God. He no longer stands on the authority of Heaven for whatever plans He attempts to carry out, but that doesn't mean He won't have some fun with people, having the appearance of the truth from a distance. Satan is the former patrol car in the spiritual realm! Much like counterfeit money, you can't fathom the innumerable opportunities for anything less than 100% authenticity and truth, except to study what is 100% truth. Thus, our relationship with God through the person of Jesus Christ is just as important for the believer as it is for the pastor that is leading the believer. And if that is the case for our lives as adults, how much more to teach our children to recognize the truth. On this #youthPastorWednesday, pray we would be and raise a church that would know and recognize the truth of God and the power of Christ. May we not be faked or freaked out over the deceptive attacks and temptations of the enemy. Pray for pastors, as they lead this next generation of the church that they would not be led away and deceived themselves. May they have a better understanding of God and His Word, that they may better instruct and model a healthy and active life of faith to all who come in contact with them. May we be reminded, that even with spiritual principles, the law establishes boundaries, yet, because of the Cross, we live under grace. A proper respect for the authority of God A clear discernment for spotting the deceit of Satan Standing firm in our faith. Having no fear of what is false. Speaking and living the truth For the glory of God. - PNC ![]() Yesterday's "verse of the day", courtesy of YouVersion Bible app, was Matthew 20:28. "Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life as a ransom for many." First, it's incredible, what Christ accomplished on the Cross, as we fast approached the weekend that we celebrate His death and resurrection. There are many challenges for which, people will rise to the occasion and many more, which people will react, "not on your life", for they know it is simply an impossible task to take on with all that is within them. Yet Jesus stepped on to the world stage knowing that only He could do the impossible for humanity. Secondly, as you know, the more I write these posts, the more things trigger the pastoral perspective. This verse was no different, for immediately I considered the times we read about Jesus stepping away. He had his times where He avoided the cross. We see Him moving away from the disciples to spend time in prayer. We see Him spend time in fellowship for no other purpose than fellowship. We see Him draw close to His inner circle; the few selected disciples who He hung out with the most. Though His intent was not to receive ministry, I believe He understand He needed times of refreshing and rejuvenation. He understood the hardship and difficulty of ministry; for even though it formally lasted only a short three years, we see His struggle. We see the angels minister to Him after He was tempted of the devil. You can almost hear His conversation with God in the final days regarding the Cross. "If there is any other way, Dad; please..." Is it entirely possible that the human element of Jesus Christ was, at times, on the verge of burnout? Certainly, He had moments of frustration in ministry, even with His disciples. "You couldn't stay awake and pray for even an hour?" Needless to say, who knows what situation or circumstance will move a pastor one step closer to burnout. While they too, seek primarily to minister rather than receive it; if Christ understand the delicate balance of battling burnout, certainly pastors (of all positions) need take time to be refreshed and rejuvenated; both by the angels of God and the people of God and receive ministry for themselves. Let us pray, this #associatePastorTuesday, for pastors struggling to find the balance in the battle of burnout. For those that are literally just steps away from burnout, pray God would strengthen their hearts and minds, even this very hour. For whatever concerns and burdens that are weighing them done, may they lay them at Jesus' feet, exchanging them for His light load. May God surround them with people and friends who will speak life into their circumstance and help bring comfort and wisdom to the matters on their mind. May the enemy not get the upper hand in his attempt to discourage, detour and derail their life, home and ministry. Pray a hedge of protection; that God would keep His hand upon them and revive them. Stronger today than ever before To continue to the work to which they've been called. That all might hear and know The goodness and grace of God For the cause of Jesus Christ. - PNC Word usage makes all the difference.
Whether you are reading this blog, reading a great book or listening to an inspiring orator, an a great many revelations are made by the receiver about the communicator. And none of us, get it right all of the time. (Hopefully), Perhaps you've read something here that was challenging. Perhaps you've heard something elsewhere that turned you off. Yet as Pastor spoke yesterday on the final words of Christ, I was reminded once again, just how much our words count. Or at the very least, how much work we should put forth into making sure they count. The statements Christ made in His final moments, were powerful and profound; speaking to the bigger picture of ideals that we, even this day, should strive to share. Grace. Compassion. Promise. They expressed His experience of the moment, of isolation, agony. They were words of completion and fellowship. Jesus' ministry was truth. It was one of impact. It was one of miracles. In His divine wisdom, He know what needed to be communicated, to who and to when and how. But as life continues to throw us curve balls and moments of frustration, anxiety and fear, we don't always communicate well... to the world around us, neither in our own homes. Likewise for pastors. They don't always say the right thing, do the right thing or convey the right thing. Yet they too, need divine wisdom and insight, as they bring people to a stronger relationship with God through the person and life of Jesus Christ. Pray, this #seniorPastorMonday, that God would help pastors as they communicate. May the boldly proclaim the Gospel. Pray they would continue to speak life in dry places, whether in the community, in their church and in their home. May they be lovers of the Truth, desirous to the miraculous transformation of lives and souls as the Holy Spirit works in the hearts and minds of those who hear. Indeed, may their be an under-current of grace, compassion and promise... even in times of isolation and agony. May they trust in the completed work of the Cross and the fellowship made available to us through the power of Jesus Christ. Ever communicating the Cross of Christ To all who need to hear May their hearts and minds be open to receive For the glory of God. - PNC ![]() Late yesterday afternoon, as we were returning home from the birthday party for the 2-yr old daughter of our friends', we were jamming to the White Heart mix tape that was stashed in my car's center console. People talk about reliving the good 'ol days... that's half the fun of driving old vehicles, that still have cassette decks! (Don't worry, it's not that old... I have an in-dash CD changer too) One of the albums, is Emergency Broadcast, an incredibly powerful album. And the words to the song, Fashion Fades, got me thinking about this #effectiveSunday post. Fashion fades // Things will change. But something stronger // will remain. The love of Jesus // stays the same So where will you be // when the fashion fades Jesus ministry, this Palm Sunday, was revolutionary. Not in a typical uproar and revolt kind of way, but that it messed up everybody's status quo. It was life-changing. Life-transforming. The effectiveness of His message for those who received and continue to receive it can't be denied. Granted, that doesn't stop people from attempting to dismiss, discount and straight-up write it off, but when confronted with the truth, there truly are two responses. * Accept. * Deny. Just as much as Jesus' ministry impacted the community and many didn't understand, couldn't comprehend and struggle with the events and decisions that transpired, so to, do we live in a day when community find itself in a similar dilemma... both inside and outside the four walls of the church. Thankfully, Jesus promised that no matter the changes that occur in our lives; that the Spirit of God works and directs in our lives, that He would never leave us, nor forsake us. We are reminded that no matter what trials and difficulties we endure, He sticks closer to us than a brother (which if you have a cool brother like I do, is pretty darn close). Thanks for joining me in prayer, this #effectiveSunday. Though life doesn't go as we hope and doesn't look like we want; may we rely on Christ as we walk this life. Though the process and methods of how life transpires and how work is done, may the message of Jesus Christ continue to transform lives and impact communities for eternity. May we ever be reminded, daily, that no matter how hard the difficulties and challenges we face, that Christ remains closer than a brother, with the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Effective for the work of the ministry Because of the truth that is the life of Christ. Though life is full of changes We stand in constant that is Christ. For the glory of God. - PNC I got to thinking yesterday afternoon, just how incredible is the truth... that God knows exactly what we have need of and is able and ready to respond BEFORE we can ask and greater than we can imagine.
God does not get scrambled. We've all had those moments, especially as parents. Honey, I can't right now; this has to be done. Hang on a minute, I'm helping your sister. You'll have to wait a few, I talking to your brother. We'll do it later; we'll deal with later. We'll talk about it.... later. Life happens and we simply can't get to everything the very moment it comes across our desk or the notification goes of on your device (whether it be the one on your desk or the one in your hand). Consider all the aspects and areas of church operations outside of the pastorate. All kinds of situations and tasks that go into and beyond prepping for a service or special event... and it takes the insight and direction of deacon board. It takes the expertise and follow-through of administrators and staff to coordinate and carry-out the details. Any number of things that we might not even think about unless someone mentioned it as being a part of their day. God knows. This was reiterated last night, as we had missionary guests from Thailand share their story and what God has been working in their ministry. Nobody but God could orchestrate such a plan. So, will you join me, this #deaconThursday? Pray God would indeed accomplish the miraculous, as He sovereignly moves and provides the details and directions of the challenges facing church operations. May He grant strength and rest to the weary; clarity to the confused and focus to the distracted. Before we can ask and greater than we can imagine, pray that God would begin, even now, to answer the prayers and send the solutions to those who are recognizing the need to call on God afresh for the difficulties and decisions that confront them... even this very hour. May their not be a spirit of discouragement, But bold confidence as they approach the throne of grace. Abba Father. Move on behalf of your people who call on your name. Not for our sake; But for your glory. - PNC ![]() "This means war. And the battle's still raging. War." -Petra Satan has always... always been out to destroy the family. Petra reminds us in their song, This Means War, from their album of the same name, that Satan "took a third of all Heaven, when he went to Hell." He sought to destroy the very family of Heaven before their was a family on Earth to conspire against. That said, he knows his fate is sealed. So he has nothing except to keep people from sealing their fate with Christ; for Christ. Anything to keep kids from becoming healthy, functioning adults. Let alone, followers of Christ. Anything to keep followers of Christ from establishing healthy, functional homes; where kids witness first-hand, a genuine faith in Christ and a passion for the things of God. Anything... to keep people from becoming people of God; more specifically, effective people of God who fulfill not only the calling God has placed upon them, but bear witness to the goodness and grace of God with any and all who they come in contact. Frustrated. Stressed. Distracted. Angry. Bitter. Unfulfilled. Anything that discounts and detracts from the work of God in our lives and His purpose being carried out for the cause of Jesus Christ. Of course, like any other battle, war is hard on everyone. But perhaps for none less, than those on the front line. For what good are the soldiers without those leading them into battle? So, we pray, on this #youthPastorWednesday, for pastors who are feeling the effects of the war within their own lives and families. May God strengthen and restore their hearts and minds; granting discernment in the difficulty and challenges they face. For their ministries, may God grant to them grace and understanding as they teach, challenge and work with kids and youth. Pray God's protection over their lives; that whatever was meant to distract, detour and derail them would fail. May the anointing of the Holy Spirit rest upon them, as they live under the power of God at work in their lives, their homes and churches; impacting the communities and culture-at-large with the truth of God and the love of Christ. Indeed, this is war. Spiritual warfare being displayed to a physical world. But greater is He who is in us Then the enemy of our souls at work against us. No power on earth, can take His love away. God be for us. For the cause of Jesus Christ. - PNC Aren't numbers incredible?
We track and count, worry and celebrate just about everything. Miles traveled. Jobs held. Anniversaries and birthdays survived (just kidding) Some get caught up in the relationships of the past; others in how many cars they've owned. Yet, some take literally, how often Jesus instructs us to extend forgiveness. And very few rejoice over the book of Numbers in Scripture. Do I need to mention bank accounts, wealth versus indebtedness and net worth outlooks? Meanwhile, it's all somewhat relative, isn't? I thought about this yesterday... when you read this, today is post number 674 since the re-launch of this site. It blows my mind. By comparison, the nation of Israel wandered the desert for 40 years. Or by our calendar, 14,600 days! Church has it's own concerns. Sure, financial picture makes the list. As do salvations and growth. Outreach impact and ministry opportunities. Square footage and longevity of ministry. Giving records. Yet, God simply calls us to be faithful. To press on and continue to do the work He has called us to accomplish. Yes, numbers have their place, just as the book does in Scripture. But it shouldn't dominate, perhaps as much as it does in our lives. So, pray, this #associatePastorTuesday, for those concerned over numbers. Whatever the topic or area of focus, may they be reminded, that in the end it's all God's and it is all up to God. May they continue to focus their efforts on what He has called them to accomplish, fulfilling their purpose and destiny. Pray a desire and a resolve to remain faithful to the work of the Lord; that stress and burnout and frustration would not rise to the level of destruction. May the peace of God that surpasses all understanding propel them forward, to greater levels of ministry and impact for the cause of Jesus Christ. For what is their to track, If we are not out doing, in the first place. May we be counted faithful first. For the glory of God. - PNC ![]() Pastor preached a great message as we get ever closer to Easter... on the topic of choices. He delivered quite a powerful message, as he spoke from the perspective of Christ on trial and the question of "what will we do with Christ", which is what the government leaders asked at the time, knowing Christ had done nothing wrong. Certainly, this question dominates our lives in light of eternity; technically it does so twice. Once from the perspective of our sinful state and for those who confess Christ as Lord, from our redeemed state. For all the choices that come secondary to that question, some still able to affect eternity and many others that won't, choices can be difficult to make... and even more difficult to live with, once they've been made. My list is getting quite long. Things I wish I hadn't done. More things I wish I had done differently. What's difficult, is that such realizations and reminders often come on the heels of a situation or circumstance that is fresh in your mind and weighs on your heart; that you wish you could do over or have a second chance to reconsider. This is especially true as we were reminded of the lesson Ronald Reagan learned as a child... not making a choice is making a choice; and eventually someone will make it for you. How much more difficult for leadership... if the choices we make for ourselves are taxing; the choices we make as parents and adults, confusing; the choices we make as children and employees, just plain wrong, the struggle for leadership and the impact it makes on the lives of those who follow is incredible. Then there are pastors... where souls are at stake and eternity hangs in the balance. Where people's faith is strengthened and encouraged or weakened and discouraged. Where communities are impacted with the Gospel of Christ and transformed or hardened as a result. Pressure abounds as do expectations. The stakes are high and so is the level of regret... and the rate of burnout as a result. On this #seniorPastorMonday, pray for pastors struggling in the choices and decisions they face, even this very day. In their homes, marriages and ministries, may God grant them wisdom and strength in the face of confusion and complexities. Pray a grace over their missteps and mistakes; may regrets not overtake their hearts and minds, but the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. May God lead and guide them, as they daily lay their lives at the Cross of Christ; surrender to Him and desirous to do His will. Pray a renewed faith and trust in God's ability and promise to use ALL things, for His glory according to His purpose... for He knows the plans He has for us, having accounted for our broken and sinful condition. Strength in the face of regret Confidence in the face of mistakes. Hope in the future, despite our past. That we choose Christ first. Seeking the face of God and His righteousness For the cause of Jesus Christ. - PNC ![]() So we had a great family day yesterday... right up until the very late end. Having to step away from the chaos, I sat on the "colder-than-what-I-thought-it-was-outside" patio surfing the 'net and Craigslist. Meanwhile, I turned on the The Healing Rock radio station, where they were playing their Saturday night show, Vector. I missed the first portion of the show, maybe the first half, I don't know... but the founder of the station network was interviewing a couple of people and they were discussing their difficulties with the church. Specifically, how it's hard sometimes to be genuine. We all step in happy and ready to go to church, excited to worship. People ask how we are doing and have to respond with positive thoughts rather than the negative reality. When truth be told... we'd rather not tell it. For who wants to hear the struggles and frustrations of life on the day we come together to celebrate Christ? "No, I'm not having a great morning... my kids fought us on getting ready for church!" "My blood pressure is up just thinking about whether we'll have an argument on the way!" Comedian Jeff Foxworthy jokes, about how by the time he gets to church, he NEEDS church, cause he's done yelled at everybody on the way there! (I shouldn't insert my own reality of what just happened 10 seconds ago.... but that was funny. Even if I'm the only one laughing. Only the sovereign timing of God could make the smile on my face exist right now.... as I just realized that same radio station is currently playing Perfect Timing by Sweet Comfort Band) But seriously... it's just as hard not to be dismissive in our short, passing responses to people as much as their honest brevity in passing, "no, I'm not really doing that great this morning". We don't want to feel as though we have to put up a front, but church morning's are busy and there's a schedule and a format. Who has time to take out 5 or 10 minutes to sit in the lobby or the cafe and say, this circumstance and frustration is immediate and raw and I need help in dealing with it? Yes, I'll give it to God and respond to the altar and go up for prayer... or maybe I won't, even though I need to; but man... if someone could help talk me through this, wow. Efficiency is often equated with speed and quickness, but we often forget that getting something done in 30 minutes that normally takes an hour is also efficient. And while effectiveness can occur in a short matter of seconds, more often than not, effectiveness comes from a habit of pattern and an investment of time. Caring takes time. Effective care takes discernment to know when the time should be short and when it's appropriate for a longer investment. We all have battles and struggles. Whether it's because we don't speak for we know other people have bigger and more challenging lives, thus we pale in comparison or we think others are too busy, that they'd rather not be bothered by our interruption... both are wrong. Life is not a competition of who's life is harder or worse off; nor should we not converse because someone seemingly has it altogether and so we recluse. We are all in God's garage. We are all being restored. If any comparison is made, it's that those further along in the restoration process are able to testify; if God brought me this far from when I came in, how amazing is what awaits on the other side of the process for your life. *longer blog = shorter prayer? Can we pray this #effectiveSunday, for the body of Christ to be real people. Real struggles. Real faith. Real friends. Coming together to a Real God. May we take the time to express genuine care and concern. Pray we would be the hands and feet of Christ to those around us; helping people through the process and journey God is taking them. May we testify to those who come behind us to the goodness and greatness of God. For even when the road is hard, God is with us. May the church exist to be an ever-present reminder of the truth... God will never leave us, nor forsake us. Effective for the kingdom of God. Because we make the investment of time. Speaking life to dead and dying places. That Christ may bring healing and restoration To our broken condition. For the glory of God. - PNC Quite some time, a made a decision to leave my radio off while at work (having a job where I could have the radio blasting all day and nobody would care) And by quite sometime, I think it might be like a year and half... which for a music lover, is a long time.
About a week or two ago, while talking with my friend, we were discussing life and he suggested, I needed to get out of my head. Perhaps, I should consider turning the radio back on. K-Love or Smile.FM. Something Christian and positive to get some encouragement and spiritual uplifting rather than my mind running 100mph in 10 different directions. Though nobody plays the great Classic Christian Rock I'm used to having, I did get hooked on a couple of "new" bands and one station played the latest from Michael W. Smith! However, in my channel surfing yesterday, a secular station played Land of Confusion, by Genesis. I like Phil Collins' music, if for no other reason there is something definitely 80's about his music. Perhaps it's all his appearances on the classic television series, Miami Vice. But catch the chorus on this... There's too many men // Too many people Making too many problems // And not much love to go round Can't you see // This is a land of confusion. This is the world we live in // And these are the hands we're given Use them and let's start trying // To make it a place worth living in. This is the time // This is the place So we look for the future // But there's not much love to go round Tell me why, this is a land of confusion. Now this is the world we live in // And these are the hands we're given Use them and let's start trying // To make it a place worth fighting for. This is the world we live in // And these are the names we're given Stand up and let's start showing // Just where our lives are going to. How incredibly profound. Not much has changed from 1986, has it? Still too many people making too many problems. Still not enough love to go around. Indeed, this world is more confusing and confused now than it was 30 years ago! (I feel old just being able to say that) This is our reality. And yet in many ways, we've failed to show up and show where are lives are going. As we engage the community, may this be the heart of the church. We have these hands and the earth is His and all the people in it. They are worth fighting for, for eternity hangs in the balance. We go to all kinds of specialists, in every arena and area of life and circumstance to make things right, yet, as the DJ stated yesterday, where do people turn to heal a broken soul? That is the part of life that matters, Phil, just where our lives are going to. So join with me and pray, this #communitySaturday. May the people of God stand up and show, our lives in light of eternity and the sovereign plan of God that none should perish, but all come to repentance. May we impact the world we live in with the love of God and the Gospel of Christ. May our names reflect the work of Christ in our lives, as he has healed our soul's broken condition. May the church be among those who do not create problems, but offer solutions; indeed the only solution that matters. For Christ is the answer to the question posed at the beginning of time. What if all creation goes awry? Christ is not plan B. In this land of confusion, He is... all there is. Thanks be unto God. - PNC Welcome!
Thanks so much for joining us, for another #missionsFriday. I still can't believe how fast time is flying. Tomorrow marks the 23 consecutive month of posting these daily prayers and I'm grateful for those of you who are supporting your pastors and ministries through prayer. I was greatly encouraged by yesterday's "verse of the day". The New American Standard states Hebrews 6:10 with these words: "For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints." Isn't that a great verse? For every once in a while, when we all have those days where we wonder if our lives are truly making an impact... not only to the unsaved around us, but also to encourage and uplift the fellow believers with whom we share life; God remembers our efforts in strengthening His kingdom. Of course, there are many more who have served and minister much more than I. And on this #missionsFriday, I felt led, to put a different twist... praying specifically for evangelists, apostles and prophets. The men and women who hold these positions within the church to bring incredible insight and wisdom; strengthening and ministering to the body of Christ. Yes, their efforts reached the lost as well, but they also call us to greater understanding and deeper faith in our walk with God as we are transformed by the power of Christ at work in our lives. These are invaluable offices; gifts really that God has blessed us with the opportunity to hear, engage and receive from Him. And they need our support just as much, prayerfully and otherwise. So, let us pray this #missionsFriday, for evangelists, apostles and prophets... for the unique circumstances and challenges they face for their ministries. May they be strengthened and encouraged even this hour. May God provide and protect, in their travels, in the time away from family, that God would be their source, for all they have need of each and every day. Pray for opportunities and doors to be open; that God would direct their paths and where He would desire to place them for such a time as this. May the church be challenged and changed anew, as these speak into and over the body of Christ; proclaiming the good news and the greatness of God... to greater depths and higher heights in our faith in Him. For the glory of God. For the advancement of the cause of Jesus Christ. - PNC Isn't life great?
We don't always know in advance, (more often than not, actually) what the day has in store; what will happen, where things will go and the time and space that will need to be allocated to manage and handle it all. So you try to forecast and predict as best you can. Then things change. And you find out, all to quickly, that not everything will fit. There simply isn't enough room, nor time. And so changes have to been made. Things have to be re-arranged. It's not a fun process, granted. It requires extra thought. Extra planning. Perhaps even extra input and help from others, as the complexities can mount fast. Likewise, as it happens in external circumstances, so too, does it happen internally, in our hearts, minds and desires. While we can try to force issues and make it work on our own, often it's best if we submit ourselves to God and ask for His help and guidance in where things need to go. Out of balance and out of alignment... and we have to find our way back to Him, as David Zaffiro just started singing. (such a cool song!) So, will you pray with me this #deaconThursday? Pray for deacons and admins, struggling with circumstances and situations, the complexities of which are quickly becoming overwhelming matters. May God give them wisdom and guidance; bring direction and clarity where rearrangements need to be made. Whether in their plans or in their lives, may there be a continued willingness for the Spirit of God to place His finger on matters that are out of balance and alignment with where God would have them to be and what He has for them to accomplish. May their efforts not be hindered by the process, but the perfecting work of Christ would propel them to greater impact for the kingdom of God. Balance... in the right place at the right time. For our lives. For our homes. For our families For our ministries. For the glory of God And the cause of Jesus Christ. - PNC ![]() I traveled a new stretch of road this morning... perhaps not technically new. Thinking about it for a moment, there's a chance I've been on it once or twice at most in the past two and half years. So, it certainly felt new. I was already driving through a pretty high-end community, but to see some of the properties for the first time... simply incredible. Not every single one mind you; I was slowly getting away from the busyness and into a more rural area, but still close enough to justify some executive-style homes. This is nothing new... I daily drive by such properties and communities. Many of them have that incredible "wow" factor that makes you want to live there. Then reality sets in and you wonder, if I could afford it, would I really want to spend it all on one property? Wouldn't I rather have a modest place AND a vacation get-away? Or a modest home and a huge barn for my dream car collection? (keep in mind, everyone else' typical "dream" garage looks very different from mine) All of this got me thinking... Sure, most of these high-end homes are just as incredible to step into as they are to drive by, but what if they aren't? Scripture was so far ahead of it's time, wasn't? Man looks at the outside appearance, but God looks at the heart. Likewise, it's easy to get caught up in these exclusive neighborhoods, wondering how everyone on the highway can afford these lift-kit luxury trucks that probably never leave payment and think that because fit and finish looks perfect, that behind closed doors, life is equally grand. Sadly, this is far from true; not only for a good number of the general population, but also a significant percentage of those in ministry. Not all of them granted, I understand that. But I get that life is hard. The struggle is real. The kids are watching, hearing and learning... and you consider the strength of your faith in light of the battles of life and wonder how this all plays out. Family is watching. So are friends. So is the church. And as we pray for pastors of youth and kids, so is the next generation of believers. May our faith and it's prominence in our lives not be just a powerful statement of appearance, but a life-long statement of substance; that while the challenges we face in life are great, we serve a God who is greater than anything that comes to seek and destroy our lives. Pray, this #youthPastorWednesday, for those pastors struggling in life, whether at home or ministry, where things just aren't going as well as what appearances would suggest. For those who feel they don't have a friend to confide in or seek for help, may God place people in their lives who will encourage and lift them up. Whatever the challenges they face and matters of the heart with which they are having difficulty, may God grant them wisdom and discernment as to the direction they should take and the decisions that should be made. Pray for the miraculous to occur in their marriages and homes; in the relationships with their kids as well as their ministry. May the youth that sit under their leadership witness and understand a true and genuine faith, that in spite of life's difficulties, their faith remains strong in Him who has sovereign placed them... for just a time as this. May we not live a life of showmanship But of substance. Not known for our accumulation But for our contribution. Not only to the community in which we live But the cause of Christ for which we serve. For the glory of God and the witness of the Cross. - PNC ![]() We all seek to have people in our lives who are understanding. And yet the adage is true; it is harder to seek to understand before being understood. We all want to go first; rarely do we desire to go second. Understanding is an interesting concept. Things may not necessarily make sense, but understanding implies that when something is explained, we can see how certain conclusions or places of decisions were arrived... even if we haven't experienced it first hand. Depending on your role in life, sometimes understanding is easier to come by than others. For as a famous comedian once said regarding parenting; we aren't interested in justice. We want quiet! I think though, the some of the most powerful places of understanding take place in marriage. While you are two people, with your own interests and friends and responsibilities, you are, at the same time, living a single life of togetherness. Conflict and tension is inevitable as there is a process of two things being made into a single unit. Perhaps more than any other person in the world, people desire to be understood by their spouse. And at times, the desire to understand first, is greater than one's own desire to be understood. This has always been my concern, when I've thought about the life of ministry. The demands and responsibilities of life are great on their own and we don't always understand the decisions our spouses make. (pick any topic here that fits) Yet when ministry demands are added to the mix, there's a whole other element of priorities and responsibilities that are added to the equation If a marriage doesn't already have a solid foundation of communication skills when it comes to matters of understanding, then ministry has the incredible opportunity to become a source of tension and frustration than one of blessing, love and compassion. For one will go give of themselves for the cause of Christ while the other stands tempted to despise the cause for the problems it creates. All marriages have rough places. Ministry is no different. Romantic relationships aren't always as beautifully written as the Hallmark channel. (which as wonderful as they are, is probably for the best) If marriage is to function as a team and present as a united front, how much more for marriages in ministry, as they work to advance the cause of Christ together? So, let's pray together, this #associatePastorTuesday, for pastors whose marriages are in trouble; perhaps weighed down from the very responsibilities and demands of ministry. May God quicken their hearts and minds and strengthen their resolve; to remain committed and work out their differences. Pray the Holy Spirit continue to move and work within us; that the desire to understand those around us, especially spouses, would be greater than our own desire to be understood. Pray that peace, love and compassion would start at home... even when the kids aren't quiet and the desire for justice among them is lost. May the impact of ministry not be hindered by our own flesh standing in the way... though the situations and priorities are important, may God help those who are having difficulty finding balance; in their marriage and their ministry and whatever may get caught and suspended in the overlap. Pray the grace of God would cover it all. For He knows where we are. And He knows what He has called us to do. He works in the lives of those around us As much as He does our own. So we pray and trust Him to accomplish the miraculous; Starting with our own self. For His glory and the cause of Christ. - PNC We had a good laugh yesterday online.
The fiancee of our youth pastor led worship during the morning service... he joked on social media that a pretty young lady on stage distracted him; he had to worship with his eyes closed! The purpose behind it however, is pretty awesome. Our previous youth pastor took a senior position out of state this past summer. And over the weekend, our worship pastor took the weekend to invest in that churches worship team. I always find it an incredible opportunity when pastors are able to invest in the ministries of other churches and other pastors. It truly is a great dynamic. For encouragement. For learning. For support. Plus, the added benefit that pastors are needed and valued beyond just the four walls of their own church and the people to whom they minister. However, it remain, as always, a difficult balance. Finding the time in and of itself, to invest in other pastors and ministries can be challenging. Furthermore, there are, at times, legitimate distractions. Sadly, they do come in all forms and a variety of people. For the enemy would love nothing more than to hinder and prevent pastors from making investments in other ministries by distracting them from their own. It doesn't take much... and it often starts innocently enough, where it might be manageable. But given the time, like anything else, and it could lead to trouble... disastrous trouble. Thus, we pray, this #seniorPastorMonday, for pastors who are struggling in their schedules. For those that are distracted, whether legitimately or innocently, pray God would strengthen them and redirect their focus... on Him, and their ministries and families. May they not be overwhelmed by pressure and frustration, but rely on the power and enlightenment of the Holy Spirit as they move forward in what they have been called to pursue. Pray also, for opportunities to invest into other ministries; that they may share their wealth and insight into other pastors and staff. May there by a unity of purpose... a synergy, as Pastor calls it; that the work of the kingdom might advance to even greater impacts. Focused on purpose. Ready to invest. For the glory of God. For the cause of Jesus Christ. - PNC The History Channel has been running quite a few re-runs of the incredibly popular show, American Pickers. I absolutely love this show. Mike and Frank, the proprietors of Antique Archaeology are priceless. The show is quite entertaining and incredibly informative.
As I considered this post, it dawned on me what makes their business work. A number of factors are obviously involved, but from a perspective of effective and efficient, knowledge is key. They've been at this game a long time, so their expertise quite extensive. The wealth of knowledge they possess, is not only mind-boggling, but they use ever bit of it to do their job well... in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency. Granted, they have items here and there where the lose a few bucks, but the remain overwhelmingly consistent in the ability to turn a profit as they dig for rusty treasures buried in people's garages and barns. For the times and things they don't know what they are looking at, they know who to call or who they need to find to be able to employ help... which gives them even more information, to use on the next pick. It truly is an art and an amazing process to watch. Of course, their friendship is hilarious as well. All of this got me thinking about matters of faith. How much more effective and efficient could the church and Christians be if we were more informed and knowledgeable about our faith, about Scripture, about other religions in order to be well-versed in arguments against Christianity... the list goes on. Furthermore, even in my own life; what are the things I know more and spend more time on that is causing me to "be behind" in faith matters and my relationship with God? Well, the list exists and we'll leave it at that. Perhaps there's a list for you? I'm sure we will sit by someone shortly in service, that if they were honest with themselves, they have such a list. So, pray this #effectiveSunday, that we would present our lists before the throne of grace. May God help us to grow in our faith, in the fear and knowledge of the Lord. Pray that we would not be hindered nor set-back, by other matters, topics and interests that have taken priority over our faith and the things of God. May we be challenged to be more effective and efficient in our Christianity. May the strength of God quicken us as the Holy Spirit works in our lives anew and afresh; as we are transformed and renewed to reflect the person of Jesus Christ to a greater degree. For the glory of God. For the cause of Jesus Christ. As we seek Him first And His kindgom. - PNC |
